Modern families are an intrepid bunch, especially when it comes to our holidays. Looking beyond traditional hotels and b&bs, we’re glamping in yurts, sleeping in tree houses and shacking up in shepherd’s huts. Thanks to the likes of Airbnb and Home Swap, we’re even holidaying in each other’s homes.
Now, with Beds on Board, you can spend the night on a luxury yacht, for less than the price of a Travelodge. But there’ll be no sailing off into the sunset – all boats are safely moored in marinas and moving them is strictly against the rules.
How it works. The booking process is refreshingly simple. I sign up to the website, choose my required dates, destination and number of guests, and I’m given a selection of fancy boats to choose from.
Even without the prospect of a cruise, being on the boat is exciting. Reclining on deck with a glass of something cold as the sun sets over the water, we feel like interlopers in a world we’d never normally have access to. A boat like this would cost thousands to charter, but here we are – and for tonight, it’s all ours.
Marinas, by their very nature, are in pretty places with great restaurants, and the beauty of a Beds on Board stay is that you’re never far from a scenic waterfront stroll or great evening out.
That being said, a night onboard can be just as fun as going out. Unlike a hotel room, you can cook for yourselves and enjoy a meal on deck watched by expectant seagulls, or cuddle up in-front of a film as the sea gently rocks you to sleep.
Checking out the cabins is a lot more fun than checking-in to a hotel and that’s just the beginning.
A morning coffee on deck. An evening sundowner with friends before strolling for fresh food at a local restaurant. Spend your days exploring the local towns, nature and coastlines.
And of course checking out the other boats (deciding where your next #stayonaboat could be!) or getting out on the water with a sailing club or hiring a stand up paddle board.

LBGT and naturalist sailing holidays
Whether you are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or a naturalist, when you go away on holiday, you want to be able to relax, enjoy yourself, take in all the positive aspects of your surroundings and share it all with the person you care about most. It’s therefore important to be with other people who are open to your identity and choices.
When you charter a yacht with skipper or other crew, you want to know that the people you are going to be spending time with in a confined space will be comfortable with you and you with them.
At FREEDOM-YACHTING we try to do our best to make sure the right crew meets the right client and vice versa. We have a large selection of ‘gay friendly’ sailing yachts and crews who would be happy to sail with you and show you the best of what the Greek islands and Greek people have to offer.
Join FREEDOM YACHTING on an exciting journey through the waters that surround the largest coastline in Europe. You’ll discover deserted beaches, species that don’t exist anywhere else in the globe, islands that don’t appear on any map and secret doors that lead to a Mediterranean ”reality” not mentioned in any travel agency brochure! Whether you enjoy relaxing on deck with a cold drink… feeling the wind and trimming the sails… getting into the unspoilt lifestyle of the islanders… exploring the underwater life or spotting seals, turtles or dolphins… you’ll experience what you’re looking for!
Participate in our efforts to protect and support the local environment. Diving cruises and underwater photography cruises can also be arranged.
Please contact us for more information.
If you don’t hold your own skipper’s licence, we can provide a professional skipper, hostess, chef, deck hand or other sailing crew to join you on the yacht of your choice. Or we can offer permanently crewed yachts with their own full time skipper or other crew.
If you are ravelling alone, with a friend or partner, or in a small group, you may not want to charter a private yacht. With our cruise options you can just book as many cabins as you need on a crewed sailing yacht or cruise ship and sit back and enjoy the ride.
What is a cabin charter?
A cabin charter is a charter deal that allows you to charter only a cabin (usually on a gulet or a sailing yacht) and not the entire yacht. A cabin charter is an excellent option if you want to go sailing, but do not have a large enough group to opt for a yacht charter.
Booking a cabin on a yacht can be a great first time sailing adventure. Usually, you will be sharing a boat with 6-10 people, and you will get to know all of them well until the end of your sailing trip. New acquaintances are on the horizon. In most of book-a-cabin arrangements, all costs are included in the price, such as a professional skipper, port fees, fuel, tourist tax and even some food and necessities. This will save you some time and money. However, you do not have the freedom of choosing your daily itinerary as you would in a yacht charter since a cabin charter program sets it.
However, if your primary goal is to relax as much as possible, experience the romance of sailing, and if you do not want to give up comfort, opt for a cabin charter. A cabin charter is an excellent option if you cannot arrange a trip with your friends and family or do not have a substantial budget to afford to charter an entire yacht.
Prices of cabin charter
The most expensive cabin charter programs are, of course, those in mid-season. The price goes up if you decide to choose full-board and charter a cabin on a luxury boat. The duration of your holiday is also a key factor – naturally, a week is cheaper than two weeks. If you are chartering a cabin for yourself, expect to pay some 60% more than you would pay a cabin for two. Children are usually eligible for discounts, especially if they are small. They may even go for free. However, this depends upon your charter company’s policy.
Cabin charter program price usually includes seven-day cruising, crew, insurance, and usually half-board (breakfast and lunch), as well as a meal for the captain. A cabin charter program price typically excludes transfers, entrance fees for national parks, drinks, dinners ashore, port and tourist taxes.

This is a true cruising experience in the Greek islands, where the personal service is unrivalled throughout your trip. Experienced professional captains and hand picked crews are there to anticipate your every wish with outstanding service and genuine heart-felt hospitality.
Swimming off the yacht is another advantage to these small ship cruises that you won’t be able to do on the large international cruises. Prices include half or full board menus, with on deck BBQs, full choice buffets, and Mediterranean fusion cuisine with a distinct local flair all produced on board by acclaimed head Chefs using locally sourced ingredients.
You will be properly pampered by the attentive crew who will look after your every need on these exciting cruises through the jewels of the Greek islands. With a limited number of cabins, these small cruises give you a better chance to meet other travellers and explore smaller islands that the large ships cannot reach.
The courses are run by skipper- instructor . The north Ionian offers a variety of idyllic bays, small islands and mainland coast line to explore.
Practical courses usually run Monday – Saturday.
Wind and Sailing Conditions
The wind and sailing conditions in the Ionian Sea are ideal and predictable. From May to September the wind blows from North-West at Force 2-5. In Spring and Autumn the wind is less strong and blows usually from South-West. It arrives around noon, blows between force 3 to 6 (10 to 25 knots) and dies down at sunset. There may be strong gusts on the leeward side due to the high land (e.g Eastern side of Ithaka and Zakinthos).
The islands are therefore very popular with FREEDOM-YACHTING and it can get quite crowded in many ports, especially during August when the Greeks and Italians also take their vacations.
Recommended for novice to competent sailors, and family groups, but offering something to everyone and with many itinerary options.

What you need to know to have a great boat dog. Learn how to take any size dog on your boat, how to keep them safe, and best places to cruise with a dog.
Want to have a boat dog?
Wondering about taking your dog on your boat or going sailing with your dog? Or maybe you’re thinking about getting a dog and wondering about the realities of living on a boat with a dog.
Get Discover Living on a Boat (free mini-course). Explore whether cruising is right for you, from the lifestyle to the cost and ways to afford it.
Training your dog to “go” on the boat is well worth the time and effort. Being able to make longer passages and not having to make middle-of-the-nights trips to shore are priceless benefits. In many places, it’s a good idea to hoist and lock your dinghy at night, which makes trips to the beach just that much harder. You can read my tips on teaching a dog to use a piece of Astroturf here.
Be sure to give the dog a quick freshwater rinse when they’ve been wading or swimming in saltwater. Otherwise, they’ll get saltwater on settees and rugs. Just like when people tracking saltwater in, it won’t totally dry out . . .
Don’t be surprised if your dog loves to roll in the sand and mud on the beach. A quick dunk will get most of it off, but be sure to budget enough water to be able to give them a quick bath so you don’t have sand and salt throughout your boat.
Create a place on the boat where your dog feels safe even when conditions get “boisterous.” You’ll help your dog and you won’t wonder if they’re okay. Make sure that nothing can fall on them in their “safe place.”
A friend that had been a puppy trainer for guide dogs told us to get Paz playing games when thunderstorms and bad weather were making her nervous. This worked wonderfully and Paz has no fear of thunder, fireworks or the diesel. She may not really like them, but she’s not a basket case.
Sailing is a sport, hobby, recreational activitiy or, as some would agree, the way of life. In general, sailing is an outdoor aquatic activity which generates wind power to cause movement of the boat. Sailing is also known as one of the most sustainable outdoor activities.
Nothing but a good will, great crew and an adventerous soul.
You also need a skipper licence. You can either obtain one or hire a professional skipper for your sailing week.
You can also take your sailing shoes and other sailing equipement. These things are not neccessary but they can make your sailing vacation a lot easier. Things you mustn’t forget are sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen.
A packing list will make sure you don’t forget anything.
A skipper is a person responsible for your safety and the boat. You can think of a skipper as a professional sailor who will make sure you have the best sailing holiday possible.
You need to hire a skipper for your sailing week if you do not own a skipper licence yourself.
There are three main types of skipper licences: ICC (International Certificate of Competence), IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) and RYA. All three can be obtained by anyone who wants to obtain a sailing licence. Obtaining a skipper licence requires you to go through short training and pass a test. It is also important to make sure if your licence is valid in the country where you’re chartering a boat.
To hire a skipper, simply say to your booking agent that you need to hire one. Your booking agent will do all the rest, and the skipper will be waiting for you in the marina the day your holiday is starting.
Skipper services usually range from € 120 to € 200 per day, depending on the destination.
Skipper sleeps onboard along with the rest of the crew. Being the most responsible member of the crew, skipper needs a good rest and quality food. That’s why you must make sure skipper has a room where (s)he can sleep and (at least) one hot meal a day. You should treat a skipper with respect and as a part of your crew.
When choosing a boat for your sailing vacation, you can choose among sailboat, catamaran, gulet and motor yacht. What you are going to choose depends solely on your preferences and needs.
Sailboat is a boat propelled partly or entirely by wind and sails. But sailboats can be both, wind- (sail-) or engine-powered. Sailboats are monohulled which differentiates them from catamarans that have at least two hulls. Sailboats are great for smaller families or a smaller group of friends.
Catamaran is a boat that consists of at least two hulls which are joined by a frame. Catamarans can be either wind- (sail-) or engine-powered. They are great for bigger families or larger group of friends.
Gulet is a traditional wooden boat with characteristic two tall masts. It can host a lot more passangers than a sailboat or a catamaran. You can opt for private gulet charter which means you book the whole gulet for yourself or you can go for a cabin charter which means booking a single cabin.
Motor yacht is usually a luxury yacht powered exclusively by engine. You can charter a motor yach with crew (a cook, captain and a hostess) or without the crew which is called bareboat charter.
There are four types of yacht charters you can choose between – bareboat yacht charter, skippered yacht charter, crewed yacht charter and cabin charter. What you are going to choose depends solely on your preferences and needs
Bareboat yacht charter is the basic option when chartering a yacht, and it means chartering a yacht without a skipper. For bareboat yacht charter you are obliged to have a sailing licence and all the necessary certificates, permits and documents that prove you can sail on your own.
Skippered yacht charter is ideal for non-experienced sailors and it means chartering a yacht with a skipper.
Crewed yacht charter means chartering a yacht with a captain or a skipper, a cook and a hostess. It can also mean chartering a yacht with only a skipper.
In short, chartering a yacht with only a skipper, a hostess or a cook, makes it crewed yacht charter.
A cabin charter means chartering only a cabin (usually on a gulet or a sailing yacht) and not the entire yacht.
Sailing is one of the greatest recreations there is. It’s because it allows you to engage in sporting activity and relax at the same time. Boat allows you to sail at high speeds chasing the wind or relax in a beautiful, peaceful bays, taking a swim and enjoying the scenery with your family.
Possibilities with sailing are endless and, in the end, it all depends on you and what kind of a holiday you prefer.
Sailing has a lot of benefits for your health. For instance, sailing improves muscle strenght and endurance, improves cardiovascular health and is a great way to release some stress. It also increases agility, improves concentration and improves communication and organizational skills.
Short and obvious answer to that question is the summertime. However, lately early fall is becoming increasingly popular with sailors. Also, a big part of the answer to this question lies in the place where you are going sailing and the sailing season.
Sailing season is a time of the year when it’s best to go sailing in a certain destination. Different countries, depending on their geographical location, climate and winds, have different sailing seasons.
Sailing season in Croatia starts at the end of May and last till the beginning of the October.
Sailing season in Greece starts in April and lasts till November.
Sailing season in Italy starts in May and lasts till October.
Sailing season in Malta starts in April and last till October.
